Han vivido en diversas regiones del estado de Chihuahua desde mucho antes de la llegada de los conquistadores espa\u00f1oles. Se les conoce m\u00e1s com\u00fanmente como tarahumaras, ex\u00f3nimo que les dieron los espa\u00f1oles, y se les identifica f\u00e1cilmente por su distintiva y colorida vestimenta.<\/p>\n<p>Los aproximadamente 70,000 rar\u00e1muri de Chihuahua han sido capaces de preservar su cultura nativa y resistirse a la integraci\u00f3n total con m\u00e1s \u00e9xito que cualquier otro grupo ind\u00edgena de M\u00e9xico. Hoy viven en ciudades, comunidades rurales y ca\u00f1ones remotos.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Llegada de los espa\u00f1oles<\/h3>\n<p>Los rar\u00e1muri viv\u00edan en peque\u00f1as comunidades con un estilo de vida basado en la trashumancia y la agricultura de subsistencia cuando llegaron los conquistadores espa\u00f1oles y los sacerdotes jesuitas a principios del siglo XVII. Con la llegada de los espa\u00f1oles y el posterior descubrimiento de plata en la regi\u00f3n en la d\u00e9cada de 1630, los rar\u00e1muri se refugiaron en el extenso ca\u00f1\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>Con cuatro veces el tama\u00f1o y el doble de profundidad que el Gran Ca\u00f1\u00f3n de Estados Unidos, el terreno extremo del enorme ca\u00f1\u00f3n les proporcionaba la protecci\u00f3n que buscaban.<\/p>\n<p>No obstante, intr\u00e9pidos sacerdotes jesuitas y, en menor medida, franciscanos, establecieron misiones y los pueblos que las acompa\u00f1aban en las tierras altas del norte y el sur de la regi\u00f3n. Se hicieron grandes esfuerzos por cristianizar a los nativos, con mayor o menor \u00e9xito. A los rar\u00e1muri convertidos se les animaba a vivir dentro del sistema misi\u00f3n\/pueblo. Aunque un peque\u00f1o porcentaje de los conversos acept\u00f3 la invitaci\u00f3n, la mayor\u00eda rechaz\u00f3 la oferta o lo intent\u00f3 y la abandon\u00f3.<\/p>\n<p>Cuando los jesuitas fueron expulsados de M\u00e9xico por el rey espa\u00f1ol en 1767, a los rar\u00e1muri les quedaron restos de la doctrina cat\u00f3lica que mezclaron con sus creencias tradicionales.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243; Significa girar o dar vueltas en la lengua rar\u00e1muri. La gente se divide en dos grupos. Un grupo es representado como soldados romanos que representan las fuerzas del bien. El grupo opuesto es representado como fariseos del Nuevo Testamento, que representan al diablo y a las fuerzas malignas del mundo. A menudo carecen de agua corriente, pero tienen una gran cisterna junto a la casa de la que sacan agua cuando la necesitan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dropCapBrown\">Para las familias que viven m\u00e1s adentro del ca\u00f1\u00f3n, las dos necesidades b\u00e1sicas son las mismas: una fuente de agua y una parcela para cultivar ma\u00edz y frijoles. Mirando hacia el ca\u00f1\u00f3n, las casas se identifican f\u00e1cilmente por sus tejados met\u00e1licos.
